Sabina von Walther

Sabina von Walther - Soprano

Born in Rome, Sabina von Walther has studied at the University of Music in Vienna with Helena Lazarska and Walter Berry; master classes with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and Leone Magiera followed.

She began her career in Austria, singing
Clorinda in Monteverdis Combattimento di Tancredi under Dennis Russell Davies for ORF, interpreting the Mozart roles of Countess and Donna Anna in Bregenz and Fiordiligi and Pamina at the Wiener Kammeroper. She was seen also as Liu‘ in Turandot and as Lisa in the Land of Smiles directed by Brigitte Fassbaender in Innsbruck. From 2002 she was a member of the Ensamble of the Opera House in Nürnberg taking the roles of Euridice (in Gluck’s Orfeo), the Adina, Gilda, Gerhilde (in the Valkyrie), Micaèla, Annina (in Johann Strauss‘ Eine Nacht in Venedig) and Blanche (in Poulenc’s Les Dialogues des Carmelites).

As concert singer she sang Bach‘s
Passions, Händel‘s Messiah, the St.Cecilia Odes by Händel und Blow (at the Göttinger Händel-Festspiele), Haydn‘s Creation (under Gustav Kuhn with the Haydn-Orchestra in Bolzano, Trento and Pisa), Mozart Concert Arias and his Requiem (at Wiener Klangbogen), in Rossini‘s Stabat Mater (under Alberto Zedda with the Haydn Orchestra), in Schubert‘s Lazarus, Mendelssohn‘s Paulus, Mahler‘s IV Symphony (at the Bregenzer Festspiele) and in Les Illuminations by Britten (at the Wiener Musikverein).

In 2004 under Adam Fischer at the Haydn Festival in Eisenstadt she was
Sandrina in L’infedelta‘ delusa and in 2005 she was invited to the Ludwigsburger Schlossfestspiele as Marzelline in Beethoven’s Leonore under Michael Hofstetter. Riccardo Muti invited her to sing Asterio in Salieri’s l’Europa riconosciuta, the opening production of the 2004/05 season at Milano’s Scala, directed by Luca Ronconi.

She works closely together with her husband, the composer Arnaldo de Felice; after his first opera
Akumu, which was performed at the Zürcher and Münchner Festspiele, Sabina interpreted in november 2005 the title role of his Medusa, later seen also in the Stadttheater Bozen with the Bayerische Staatsoper.

In the season 2005/06 she made her debut at the Teatro Argentina in Rome as Countess in Le nozze di Figaro under Francesco La Vecchia and at the Teatro Regio in Parma she sang the
first lady in die Zauberflöte directed by Jean Christophe Spinosi. In 2006/07 she made her debut at the Palau de les Arts Reina in Valencia and at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino as Freia in a new production of Wagner’s Rheingold under Zubin Mehta. In 2008 she appeared in Schumann’s scenes from Goethe’s Faust at the Teatro Regio in Parma, where she also sang in Mendelssohn’s Bühnenmusik zum Sommernachtstraum.

In 2009 she returned to Valencia with Rheingold and was heard in the
Valkyrie under Stefan Anton Reck in Bari.

In 2010 she sang in Bruckner’s
Te Deum conducted by Zubin Mehta and in concerts with the Haydn Orchestra in Bolzano and Trento under Gustav Kuhn (De Felice / Il gigante egoista). In 2010 the young singer will make her debut in Verdi’s Alzira at Theater St. Gallen and in Gorecki’s III Symphony.
