Leopold Hager

Leopold Hager - Conductor

Leopold Hager, born in Salzburg, Austria, studied conducting, organ, piano, harpsichord and composition at the famous Mozarteum in his hometown.

After holding several posts in Mainz, Linz and Cologne he became General Music Director in Freiburg/Breisgau, then Principal Conductor of the Mozarteum Orchestra in Salzburg and, until 1996, Music Director of the RTL Symphony Orchestra Luxembourg.

From 2005 to 2008, Leopold Hager served as Chief Conductor at the Volksoper in Vienna where he conducted new stagings of
Sophie's Choice (in coproduction with the Deutsche Oper Berlin), The Magic Flute, Turandot, Der Freischütz, La Traviata, Hoffmanns Erzählungen, Hochzeit des Figaro and Meistersinger. Much acclaimed guest performances of the Volksoper took place in Japan in 2008, a concert tour of Spain followed in 2009.

He is a frequent guest of many of the world's leading opera houses such as the Bayerische Staatsoper Munich, Semperoper Dresden, Metropolitan Opera New York, Lyric Opera Chicago, Royal Opera House Covent Garden London, Teatro Colon Buenos Aires, Opera Bastille Paris and Vienna State Opera.

Major operatic guest engagements of the past include Deutsche Oper Berlin (
Rosenkavalier and a double production for the opening premiere of the season 2007/08: Elektra by Richard Strauss, combined with a rarity, the very seldom performed opera Cassandra by Vittorio Gnecchi), Opéra Lyon (Fidelio) and National Theatre Prague (Don Giovanni).
At the Edinburgh Festival he performed Strauss's
Capriccio with a stellar cast; concert performances of Mozart's Idomeneo and Wagner's Tristan (Act II) in Luxembourg were much acclaimed. In 2008/09 he conducted the season's opening premiere at the Leipzig Opera, a new staging of Wagner's Flying Dutchman.

Numerous tours and concerts led and continue to lead him all over Europe and the USA. Leopold Hager has worked with orchestras such as the Staatskapelle Dresden, Bamberger Symphoniker, Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, NDR Sinfonieorchester Hamburg, MDR Sinfonieorchester Leipzig, Munich Philharmonic, Vienna Symphony, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam, Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, Accademia di Santa Cecilia Rome, Danish National Radio Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre de Paris, Orchestre National de Lille and National Symphony Orchestra Washington. He conducted the Vienna Philharmonic in Vienna, Prague and Rome.

When Leopold Hager first performed with the English Chamber Orchestra at the Würzburger Mozartfest back in 1988, a close relationship was immediately established. He has since recorded numerous CDs with this orchestra, featuring especially works of Mozart and Mendelssohn. Moreover, his extensive discography includes all early operas and concert arias of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
