Georg Nigl - Baritone
Since his childhood when he was the soloist with the Vienna Boys’ Choir, Georg Nigl has been surrounded by music, particularly that of Viennese composers. In his late teens, it was evident that he would develop into a baritone and he became a student of Hilde Zadek.
Early in his career, he took the deliberate decision to expand the range of music in his repertoire and today he is internationally renowned both as a specialist in early music and as a much-sought-after exponent of contemporary works. Nevertheless he also regularly performs works of the late 18th and 19th centuries as a well as those from the 20th century.
When asked to name his favourite operatic characters, Georg Nigl comes up with three without hesitation: Monteverdi’s Orfeo, Mozart’s Papageno and Berg’s Wozzeck, all of them human characters with an inherent brokenness. Nigl’s ability to lend a highly specific personality in terms of both voice and expression to certain roles accounts to a large extent for his success at major opera venues including Teatro alla Scala, Staatsoper Unter den Linden Berlin, Théâtre de la Monnaie Brussels, Festival Aix-en-Provence, Salzburg Festival and the Vienna Festwochen.
His interpretation of contemporary operatic roles has earned Georg Nigl special praise, in particular the title roles in Pascal Dusapin’s Faustus, the Last Night and Wolfgang Rihm’s Jakob Lenz and most recently in Dusapin’s Passion. On the opera stage he has worked with such distinguished directors as Andrea Breth, Frank Castorf, Jürgen Flimm and Peter Mussbach; and at both opera and concert venues he has performed with renowned conductors including Daniel Barenboim, Daniele Gatti, Michael Boder, René Jacobs, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Jordi Savall, Thomas Hengelbrock and Giovanni Antonini.
He has made numerous radio and television recordings, and DVD and CD releases are available on the Deutsche Grammophon, ECM, Passacaille, Collegno and Naïve labels.
Highlights in the coming season include the continuation of the Complete Cycle of Bach Cantatas at the Vienna Konzerthaus (with Luca Pianca, Wolfgang Mitterer and Ensemble Claudiana); the title role in Monteverdi’s Orfeo at La Scala (in a production by Robert Wilson, conducted by Rinaldo Alessandrini); the title role in Wozzeck for the Bolshoi Theatre and also for the Wiener Festwochen; concerts with Nikolaus Harnoncourt and Pierre Boulez; lieder recitals at the Vienna Konzerthaus and the Köln Philharmonie.
