Dietrich Henschel - Baritone
His international career started with the title roles of two opera productions: Henze`s “Prinz von Homburg” at the Deutsche Oper Berlin and Busoni`s “Dr.Faust” at the Opéra National de Lyon. These appearances were followed immediately by engagements at the two opera houses in Paris: at the Chatelet Gluck`s “Alcèste” with Gardiner and Wilson , as well as “Dr.Faust” with Nagano and “Die schweigsame Frau” with Dohnanyi; at La Bastille he appeared as Pelleas in Bob Wilson`s legendary production of Debussy`s “Pelleas et Melisande”, and as Count in Robert Carsen`s production of Strauss` “Capriccio”.
He now regularly appears at the opera houses in Berlin, Munich, Amsterdam, Brussels, Lisbon, Madrid, Geneva, Zurich and Paris, and also at international festivals like Salzburg, Aix-en-Provence and Florence. He is working with conductors like Harnoncourt, Gardiner, Herreweghe, Eschenbach, Nagano, Mehta, Janowski, and internationally renowned orchestras like Orchestre de Paris, London Symphony Orchestra, Berliner Philharmoniker, Wiener Philharmoniker and Concertgebouworkest.
Dietrich Henschel is specially devoted to concert and lied, and gives recitals all over Europe and the US, accompanied by Fritz Schwinghammer, Helmut Deutsch, Michael Schäfer and Steven Osborne.
Recently he was also very successful as conductor: he gave his debut with the Paris Ensemble Diabolicus at the Chatelet with Beethoven`s I Symphony and Mahler`s “Lied”, followed by concerts with the Orchéstre de l`Opera de Rouen, and the orchestra of the Theatre de la Monnaie, Brussels. His first CD conducting works by Wagner and Schönberg/Strauß has been released by Ambroisie/Naive recently.
His wide discography with works of all periods is remarkable and includes among many others the following recordings: Schubert`s “Winterreise” (Gage), Wolf`s “Mörike-Lieder” (Schwinghammer), Mahler`s “Kindertoten-,Rückert- and Wunderhornlieder” (Nagano), lieder by Korngold and Beethoven (Deutsch/Schäfer), lieder with orchestra by Hugo Wolf (Nagano), lieder by Vaughan-Williams, Mahler and Duparc (Schwinghammer), Schoenberg`s “Jakobsleiter” (Nagano) , Schubert’s “Schwanengesang” (Schwinghammer), Haydn’s “Creation” and the complete recording of Busoni`s “Dr.Faust”, which has been awarded the Grammy 2000.
