Alfred Muff - Bass
Alfred Muff is considered to be one of the most sought after bass-baritones of his repertoire and is regularly invited to the world’s best renowned opera and concert houses. Born in Lucerne, he studied at the Conservatory of his hometown before moving to the Musikhochschule Berlin.
Alfred Muff is a fix member of the Zurich Opera, where he has proved his versatile repertoire with roles as Wotan and Wanderer in Wagner’s Ring des Nibelungen, the title role in Der fliegende Holländer, Gurnemanz in Parsifal, Kurwenal in Tristan & Isolde, Landgraf in Tannhäuser, König Heinrich in Lohengrin, Barak in Frau ohne Schatten, Jochanaan in Salome, Baron Ochs von Lerchenau in Rosenkavalier, Morosus in Die schweigsame Frau, Pizzaro in Fidelio, Osmin in Entführung aus dem Serail, Sarastro in Die Zauberflöte, Doktor in Wozzek and Lulu, Balducci in Benvenuto Cellini in numerous performances which have been equally acclaimed by press and audience during the last years.
He has worked with many renowned orchestras and conductors such as Claudio Abbado, Herbert Blomstedt, James Conlon, Christoph von Dohnanyi, Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Eliahu Inbal, Erich Leinsdorf, Zubin Metha, Georges Prêtre, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Jeffrey Tate, Armin Jordan, Giuseppe Sinopoli, Sir Georg Solti, Horst Stein and Gerd Albrecht.
Alfred Muff can be heard in recordings of Die Frau ohne Schatten, Der fliegende Holländer, Die Walküre, Die Gezeichneten, Hagadah (Dessau), Die Zauberflöte, as well as Bruckner’s Te Deum and the F-minor-Mass.
Important steps in his international career include engagements at La Scala in Milano, at the Vienna State Opera, the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich, der the State Operas in Hamburg and Dresden, the Deutsche Oper Berlin and the Staatsoper unter den Linden, Berlin, the Cologne Opera House, the Opéra de Paris, the Opéra de Bastille, Paris, the San Francisco Opera, the Teatro del Liceu, Barcelona, the Teatro Colon, Buenos Aires, the NHK Tokyo, RAI Torino as well as the festivals of Taormina, Aix en Provence, Salzburg Festival and the Vienna Festival.
Besides his many operatic performances, Alfred Muff is dedicating an important part of his work to the concert repertoire. As a concert soloist, he was invited by Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra dell’ Accademia di Santa Cecilia Roma, Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Genève, Tonhalle Orchester, Zürich, to the Vienna Musikverein and Konzerthaus, to the Brucknerhaus Linz, the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra as well as the Lucerne and the Prague Spring Festivals.
His wide-spread repertoire includes Bach’s St John Passion, Haydn’s Creation and Seasons, Beethoven’s IX Symphony and Missa Solemnis, the Mozart and Brahms Requiem, Dvorak’s Requiem and Te Deum, Pfitzner’s Von Deutscher Seele, Schönberg’s Gurrelieder, Mahler’s VIII Symphony, Strawinsky’s Oedipus Rex, Dessau’s Hagadah, Penderecki’s Polish Requiem, Schnittke’s Faustkantate, Verdi’s Requiem and many others.
