Alexandra Coku - Soprano
The American soprano received her B.A. in English Literature under a full scholarship from Stanford University before going on to Indiana University for her M.M. and doctoral studies, where she studied with Professor Margaret Harshaw. Since 1989 she has studied with Professor Klesie Kelly-Moog at Conservatory of Music in Cologne.
In the 1988-89 season she made her British debut appearing as Euridice in Harry Kupfer’s celebrated production of Gluck’s „Orfeo ed Euridice“ at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden. In the same season she made her operatic debut at the Netherlands Opera. After that highly successful year her international career began to unfold. In the following years she appeared at the Opéra Lyon, the State opera Vienna, the Bavarian State opera Munich, the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, as well as in the Operas of Frankfurt, Köln, Bonn, Monte Carlo, Geneva, Lyon, Nancy, Toulouse, Marseille, Houston and Chicago, where she performed a broad repertoire from Early Music to contemporary Operas with highlights in performances of Mozart’s Pamina (Magic Flute) and Gräfin (Figaro).
Apart from her Opera engagements she appeared at important concert venues like the Concertgebouw Amsterdam and the Konzerthaus Berlin and on festivals like the Glimmerglass, the Spoleto Festival, Ludwigsburger Schlossfestspiele and Händel Festspiele Halle. She performed under the batons of influential conductors like Sylvain Cambreling, Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, John Eliot Gardiner, Michael Gielen, Ludwig Güttler, Philippe Herreweghe, René Jacobs, Hartmut Haenchen, Christopher Hogwood, Vassili Sinaiski and Steven Sloane.
She appeared on recordings of labels like Deutsche Grammophon, Laserlight and Arte Nova in Schumann’s »Paradies und die Peri« (Sir John Eliot Gardiner), Mahler’s IV Symphony (Sylvain Cambreling) and Mendelssohn’s »Elijah« (Harmut Haenchen).
Recently she appeared as Pamina and Musetta at the NY City Opera, as Contessa in Le Nozze di Figaro at the Pittsburgh Opera, she sang Ginevra (Ariodante) under the baton of Christopher Hogwood and Pamina under Claus Peter Flor in Houston. She also gave her debut at the Deutsche Oper Berlin as Elektra in Mozart’s Idomeneo. On the concert stage she performed III Soprano of Mahler’s XIII Symphony with Maestro Inbal at the Konzerthaus Berlin.Highlights of 2005/06 were Mahler’s II Symphony (Malmö Symphony Orchestra), Mahler’s IX Symphony in Napoli, Beethoven’s IX Symphony (Orchestre National de Lille) Woglinde at the Ring Cycle of the Netherlands Opera as well as her debut as Donna Elvira (Don Giovanni) at the Opera National du Rhin Strasbourg and “Proserpina” at the Schwetzingen Festival.
In 2006/07 she returned to the Toulouse Opera House in the world premiere of Fenelons “Faust”. In 2007/08 she will give her debut with the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra, the Residentie Orkest Den Haag, the Sao Paolo Symphony Orchestra and she sings Michaela/ Carmen at the Palau de les Arts Valencia under Lorin Maazel. Furthermore she will be at the Luzern Festival with the Bamberger Symphoniker where she sings in a concert version of Rheingold the part of Woglinde.
In 2008/09 Alexandra Coku will make her Cincinnati Opera debut singing the role of Florencia in Florencia en el Amazonas of the mexican composer Daniel Catán. She will also sing the Countess / Nozze di Figaro and Fiordiligi / Cosi Fan Tutte in Nuremberg, Paulus (Mendelssohn) in a concert with the Orquestra Sinfonica do Estado in Sao Paulo, as well as Kaddish (Bernstein) with the Aaachen Sinfonie Orchester.
